Hydration & Goals

How is my daily water goal calculated?

Your daily goal is calculated using a formula based on four factors you provide during onboarding:

  • Body weight — heavier individuals need more water
  • Biological sex — adjusts for physiological differences (including pregnancy and breastfeeding)
  • Activity level — more active lifestyles require more hydration
  • Climate type — hot, arid, or high-altitude climates increase water needs

You can update any of these factors in Settings → Profile to recalculate your goal. You can also manually override the calculated goal if you have specific medical guidance.

What beverages can I track?

Hydriq supports 20+ drink types including water, coffee, tea (multiple varieties), juice, milk, sports drinks, smoothies, soda, energy drinks, coconut water, and alcoholic beverages (beer, wine, spirits, cocktails). You can also create custom drinks with your own name, amount, and caffeine content.

Each drink type has a Beverage Hydration Index (BHI) score that indicates how well it contributes to your hydration relative to plain water.

Does coffee or tea count toward my hydration goal?

Yes. While caffeinated beverages have a mild diuretic effect, research shows they still contribute positively to hydration. Hydriq uses a Beverage Hydration Index to weigh each drink's contribution — coffee and tea contribute to your goal but at a slightly reduced rate compared to plain water.

Hydriq also tracks your total caffeine intake separately so you can monitor your consumption.

What is the Beverage Hydration Index (BHI)?

The BHI is a quality scoring system based on published hydration research. It measures how effectively a beverage hydrates you compared to plain water (which has a BHI of 1.0). For example, milk scores higher than water due to its electrolyte content, while alcohol scores lower due to its diuretic effect.

Your daily stats show both total volume consumed and a quality-adjusted hydration score.

Spirit Companion

What is the Spirit companion?

Your Spirit is a digital companion character that lives on your home screen and evolves as you build your hydration habit. It progresses through 5 growth stages:

  1. Sprout — just getting started
  2. Blooming — building consistency
  3. Flowering — strong habits forming
  4. Thriving — well-established routine
  5. Ocean — mastery level

Your Spirit also has moods that react to your hydration status throughout the day, and can be customized with skins, outfits, and accessories.

How does the Spirit grow?

Your Spirit's growth is driven by two factors: consistency (how regularly you meet your daily goal) and volume (how much you drink relative to your goal). Building a streak of consecutive days meeting your goal is the fastest way to advance your Spirit's growth stage.

Streaks & Achievements

Why did my streak reset?

Your streak resets if you don't meet your daily hydration goal by the end of the day (your set sleep time). Common reasons:

  • You didn't log enough drinks to reach your goal
  • You forgot to log drinks you actually consumed
  • Your goal was recently recalculated to a higher value

Hydriq sends streak-save alerts 2 hours before your sleep time if you're at risk of losing your streak. Make sure notifications are enabled for these alerts.

What is a streak freeze?

A streak freeze protects your streak for one day if you don't meet your goal. You have 1 freeze available at a time. It is automatically used when your streak would otherwise break. Once used, you'll need to maintain your streak to earn another one.

How many achievements are there?

Hydriq has 28 unlockable achievements across categories like consistency, volume milestones, exploration (trying different drink types), and special challenges. You can view all achievements and your progress in the Achievements gallery.

Reminders & Notifications

How do the smart reminders work?

Hydriq uses several strategies to send you timely reminders:

  • Interval-based: Regular reminders spaced throughout your waking hours
  • Gap-based: Alerts when it's been more than an hour since your last drink and you haven't met your goal
  • Pattern-based: Detects times when you historically drink less and nudges you proactively
  • Streak-save: Urgent alerts before bedtime if your streak is at risk

All scheduling happens locally on your device. No data is sent to any server.

Why am I not receiving notifications?

Check the following:

  • Ensure notification permission is granted: Settings (system) → Apps → Hydriq → Notifications
  • Check that reminders are enabled in Hydriq: Settings → Notifications → Enable Reminders
  • Some manufacturers (Xiaomi, Samsung, Huawei) aggressively kill background apps. Check your device's battery optimization settings and exempt Hydriq from battery restrictions.
  • Verify that "Do Not Disturb" mode isn't blocking notifications during your active hours

Data & Backup

How do I back up my data?

Hydriq offers three backup methods:

  • Automatic local backup: The App periodically creates encrypted snapshots on your device (up to 7 retained).
  • Manual JSON export: Settings → Data & Privacy → Export Backup. Saves a complete JSON file to your Downloads folder.
  • Google Drive backup: Settings → Data & Privacy → Sign in with Google. Your data is encrypted and uploaded to a hidden app-specific folder in your Drive.
How do I transfer data to a new phone?

Easiest method: Enable Google Drive backup on your old phone. On your new phone, install Hydriq, go to Settings → Data & Privacy, sign in with the same Google account, and restore from your cloud backup.

Manual method: Export a JSON backup from your old phone. Transfer the file to your new phone (via email, file sharing, USB, etc.). Open Hydriq on your new phone and use Settings → Data & Privacy → Import Backup to import the file.

Can I export my data as a spreadsheet?

Yes. With Hydriq Pro, you can export your hydration logs as a CSV file from Settings → Data & Privacy → Export CSV. This file can be opened in Google Sheets, Excel, or any spreadsheet application.

Is my data encrypted?

Yes. Your local database is encrypted with SQLCipher (AES-256-GCM), and the encryption key is stored in the Android Keystore hardware-backed security system. Google Drive backups are additionally encrypted with Google Tink AEAD before upload. All network traffic uses HTTPS.

How do I delete my data?

See our detailed Data Deletion Guide for step-by-step instructions. You can delete individual entries, all local data, cloud backups, or everything by uninstalling the app.

What does Hydriq Pro include?

Hydriq Pro ($2.99, one-time purchase) unlocks:

  • 8 premium Spirit skins
  • 13 outfits and 15 accessories

  • Monthly calendar heatmap view
  • CSV data export
  • Edit and delete log history

All core hydration tracking features (drink logging, reminders, stats, insights, achievements, quests, Spirit growth, widget) are free forever.

Can I restore my Pro purchase on a new device?

Yes. Your purchase is tied to your Google Play account. Install Hydriq on your new device with the same Google account, and your Pro status will be automatically restored. If it doesn't restore immediately, go to Settings — the app checks your purchase status on launch and when you open Settings.

How do I get a refund?

Refunds are handled by Google Play, not by us. To request a refund:

  1. Visit Google Play's refund page
  2. Find your Hydriq purchase in your order history
  3. Follow Google's refund process

Google typically processes refund requests within 48 hours of purchase. After that window, refunds are at Google's discretion.

What is the Tip Jar?

The Tip Jar is a way to support Hydriq's development beyond the Pro purchase. It offers three optional tip amounts ($0.49, $0.99, $1.49). Tips are consumable — you can send them multiple times. They do not unlock any additional features.

General

Does Hydriq work offline?

Yes, fully. Hydriq is designed as an offline-first app. All drink logging, reminders, stats, achievements, and Spirit features work without an internet connection. Internet is only needed for Google Drive backup, Google Sign-In, and in-app purchases.

Does Hydriq track my location?

No. Hydriq does not request location permissions, does not access GPS, and does not track your location in any way.

Does Hydriq collect any analytics or tracking data?

No. Hydriq contains zero analytics SDKs, zero crash reporting tools, zero advertising frameworks, and zero telemetry. We have no servers collecting your data. See our Privacy Policy for full details.

Is Hydriq available for iOS?

Not currently. Hydriq is an Android-only app. There are no immediate plans for an iOS version, but this may change in the future.

How do I report a bug or suggest a feature?

Email us at hydriq.app@gmail.com with a description of the issue or your suggestion. For bugs, please include your device model, Android version, and steps to reproduce the problem.
